Boeing’s June launch of the long awaited stretched 737- 300, designated the 737-400, opens up possibilities of change in the future Ansett fleet that have not been mooted till the present. In offering the following scenario, we would like to stress that these are only our thoughts; though I am sure you will agree that there is a degree of logic behind the basic thinking that could well, in time, come to pass as history.
Both Ansett and Australian Airlines have indicated that they ultimately will extend the capacity of their 737-300s to suit market conditions. Those conditions will of course be a realisation that the aircraft is capable of taking over many of the routes presently flown by the large and fuel thirsty 727. Some form of relaxation of the existing capacity controls would be another factor that would rapidly see the aircraft carrying more productive payloads than they presently are slated for.
