Air New Zealand is targeting Australians with a new ad campaign starring actress Isla Fisher.

The “Somewhere Over the Tasman” campaign features Fisher meeting and befriending a young girl travelling solo on an Air New Zealand flight, which the airline says is designed to highlight its “famous Air New Zealand hospitality”.

“From the outset, we knew we needed to work with someone who could capture our sense of fun and entertaining spirit, while also resonating with the Australian audience. Who better than the iconic AACTA Award winning actress, Isla Fisher,” said Air New Zealand’s general manager for Australia, Kathryn O’Brien.

“Partnering with Isla allows us to showcase the warm and down-to-earth approach to service we are known and loved for while also showing why we are the airline of choice for seamless connections to New Zealand and beyond.

“We love having Australian travellers onboard and we look forward to many more experiencing the Kiwi way for themselves.”

“As Australians, we spend a lot of time on flights when travelling, so we know the importance of in-flight service, and that’s why I love Air New Zealand. I’ve been a long-time fan of the airline, and I’m incredibly grateful to be fronting this campaign,” she said.

“I’ve flown from LA to Australia with Air New Zealand many times and I love the way the crew goes above and beyond to care for passengers. The iconic Kiwi hospitality always shines.

“I’m excited to share my love for New Zealand with my fellow Australians and hope you enjoy this campaign as much as I enjoyed filming it.”

The new ad campaign follows the release of Air New Zealand’s latest safety video last week, a sports-themed offering starring basketball player Steven Adams.

According to Air New Zealand CEO Greg Foran, the video aims to be informative and entertaining for passengers.

“We know an entertaining safety video is what our customers want – so we’ve done just that. Basketball as a sport is synonymous with entertainment, so it gave us plenty of shots at creating fun, engaging content,” he said.

“As one of the fastest growing sports in Aotearoa, it’s an exciting time to back basketball and shoot for something special. Eagle eyed basketball fans should keep their eyes peeled for nods to the sport in the video – including a homage to basketball legend LeBron James.

“It’s been a few years since we launched a new safety video and with the peak travel season fast approaching, it’s the perfect time to see a new video in the skies. We can’t wait for our customers to catch our latest safety video during their next journey with us.”

Airlines have been criticised for “gimmicky” safety videos in recent months, with Emirates in September taking a swipe at the practice in its own “no-nonsense” video.
