• The first flight of the Boeing 747 fitted with the 50,000lb thrust Rolls Royce RB211-524B took place at Paine Field, Seattle on 3 September. Although the engines are only initially cleared to 48,000lb it is expected that they will be uprated later, probably in 1978.

• Qantas announced on 3 September that a weekly service to be operated by Boeing 707 aircraft between Perth and Ball would commence on 5 November.
