Our 1986 Regional Airline Directory looks back on twelve months that have not only seen a rise in commuter airline loadings but have once again recorded an increase in the number of operators. One wonders what we will find next year at this time as operators battle against rising Government charges while in NSW the recent review of air services in that State will determine the fate of others.

The 1984 Bosch report on aviation cost recovery was implemented on July 1st. To ease the load in the first year commuter operators are being allowed a 50% discount on these new charges. For many who work on very slim profit margins, this could be the final nail in the coffin.

Recommendations of the NSW review of air services are not expected to be implemented for at least twelve months. Already several of the recommendations concerning Sydney airport have received an airing. Among those are the use of more new generation 18-36 seat turboprops and that aircraft with less than 18 seats should be discouraged from using Sydney airport. It is interesting to note that of the 199 aircraft in use by Australia’s commuter airlines only 38 or 19% fit into the 18 seat or above category. Of these 38 aircraft only 9 could be called new generation. 69% of the commuter fleet is still in the 9 seat or under category so one wonders who is going to operate these new generation aircraft and where the money will come from to purchase them.
