Canadair have officially launched the commuter version of their Challenger 601. The 601-3A features a fuselage stretch of 18ft Bin and will accommodate 48 passengers in a fourabreast32in pitch configuration. The aircraft is optimised for typical sectors at max payload of 1000sm or 1400sm carrying a 10,000lb freight load. Canadair claim the aircraft will fill a void in the medium haul 'thin' market bypassing ever congested major hubs. The aircraft will also be particularly applicable to the fast growing small parcel operators which were a major driver for the Challenger in the first place. Envisaged flyaway price is $US13m and certification is planned for 1989190

Problems at Fokker as New Types Enter Service:
The Dutch Government moved during October to provide an additional cash injection to the vast Fokker concern.
Fokker’s problems stemmed from protracted development delays on both the Fokker 50 propjet and the Fokker 100 twinjet programmes. Though basically developments of existing aircraft, the two projects absorbed more time, money and technical resources than the relatively small Dutch company could muster. The consequence was that delivery payments to Fokker were delayed and in some cases, as was typified by Ansett’s Fokker 50 order, a substantial reimbursement had to be paid due to the delivery slipping beyond the agreed contract date. These delays and the cessation of F27 and F28 production left the company cash short at a time when it was also facing heavy development cost overruns on the two new projects.
