Brisbane Airport ATC Nightmare
New Brisbane Airportset to Become an Atc Nightmare!
With the opening finally imminent of Brisbane’s massive new airport and domestic terminal complex, the Civil Air Operations Officers’ Association of Australia has warned that the airport will become a veritable ATC nightmare for controllers and aircrew alike.
Commenting on the airport in a recent CAOOAABulletin, the President of the association, Mr DB Stuart, reiterated that in their best tradition the Department of (then) Transport during the late seventies opposed almost every recommendation made at the time by both ATC and AFAP representatives.
The sheer size of the airport, the layout of the taxiways and the positioning of the various facilities in relation to the runways will make its day to day operation a nightmare, claims the CAOOM. In the control tower, one of the largest in the world and the tallest in Australia, there is no provision for an emergency exit other than a central stairwell or lift while a lack of smokehoods would make survival in a fire a doubtful proposition. The con:,ole, being a standard issue Departmental console is located the wrong way around. Thus the aerodrome controller is at the opposite end to that which he should be.
