Pilots Cease Support for Flight Engineers in Ansett A320 Issue:
The executive of the Australian Federation of Airline Pilots (AFAP) has withdrawn its support for the operation of future Ansett A320 airliners with three crew members.
The AFAP in fact has gone as far as stating that its members will refuse to fly the A320 if a Flight Engineer is not a fully integrated part of the flight deck routine. To accomplish this the FE would require his own dedicated work station just aft of the first officer. This work station would include, at the minimum, according to the AFAP, an MCDU (Multipurpose Control Data Unit) and an ECAM (Electronic Centralised Aircraft Monitoring system) display in addition to duplicated switchgear with which to operate the systems displayed at the pseudo-FE station. A meeting scheduled to be held in late February between Airbus, AFAP and Ansett executives was expected to announce that the proposed FE station was impractical from a design point of view and operationally unnecessary.
