Qantas Gets Even
March bilateral talks in Wellington should ease a long standing irritation. For years, Air New Zealand’s practice of flying out of Sydney with US-bound Australians, making a brief call at Auckland and then flying on, has rankled Qantas. One Australian source estimated Air New Zealand earned $150 million by carrying 100,000 Australians annually on this route – an estimate said in Auckland to be ‘a little high’.
Anyway, the talks agreed, in principle, to allow Qantas long sought rights to fly between Australia and the US via Auckland and to allow Air New Zealand to fly direct from Sydney to Los Angeles, without the formality of an Auckland stopover. The New Zealand airline is not expected to take up this concession until it takes delivery of its first 747-400 next year.
