On The Airbands
Peter Cokley, of Burleigh Heads, Queensland, offers this gem of a story. Dateline: Coolangatta. Sunday 11 August, 1985. 12. 10pm. A domestic widebody had just landed on runway 14 and was backtracking. A Piper 24 was on the taxiway heading towards the runway. The Piper turned onto the runway to be greeted by . . . TOWER: ‘Papa India Papa. . . hold on, there’s a rather large impediment on the runway’ (No ID – but obviously from the widebody) ‘Excuse me!’ TOWER: ‘We’re all a bit concerned about our weight lately!’ (No ID – but again the widebody) ‘Want to have a go at chicken pal?’
