New Day Fighter Squadron Takes Off
The Royal Australian Air Force is to re-establish No. 76 Squadron – as a day fighter unit operating from Williamtown Air Base near Newcastle. It will be equipped with Macchi MB-326H jets which have been used by the RAAF as advanced trainers, since 1967.
The reformation of No76 Squadron, which was a Mirage squadron until disbanded in August 1973 follows a decision by the Chief of the Air Staff, Air Marshal Ray Funnell that pilot ‘Wings’ will be awarded on the new Air Force basic trainer, the Pilatus PC-9. (Refer p71 May 88 AA. )
