The big star at this year's Farnborough Air Show will be the Mikoyan MiG-29 Fulcrum. This Is the first time that the Soviet Union has brought a front fine combat aircraft to an international air show and hopefully marks a new era in which other similar types, such as the impressive Su-27 Flanker and MiG-31 Foxhound, will be able to display their capabilities before a Western audience. New Raaf Base Opened:
The Prime Minister, Mr Hawke, on June 11 officially opened and named Australia’s newest Air Force base after wartime Prime Minister, John Joseph Curtin.
RAAF Base Curtin is located about 35km southeast of Derby, Western Australia, and 2,600km north of Perth and is the first major military airfield built in Australia since World War II. Built at a cost of $64 million the “bare base’ airfield will be operated by a skeletal staff. The base will be fully manned for periodic exercises and for military aircraft staging through the area. The concrete pavement area covers some 100,000 sq metres while more than 6,000 tonnes of bitumen was used to complete the 3,050m strip.
