Boomerang A46-163 was from the second batch ordered by the RAAF. Because of minor modifications this new order was given the designation CA-13.

Profile – CAC Boomerang

On February 19, 1942, just over ten weeks after the attack on Pearl Harbour, Japanese bombers appeared in the skies over Darwin. Thus began a period of dented danger for AiJstrafla, one which has never been equalled before or since. The defences were not ready. No RAAF aircraft was capable of defending the town or even of intercepting the bombers so the raiders escaped unscathed. As well as on Darwin, increasingly heavy attacks followed on Broome, Port Hadland, Wyndham, Katherine ahd Townsvi/le and these served to accelerate the development of our; first Indigenous fighter plane, the Commonwealth Aircraft Corporation’s . . .

The dramatic bombing of Pearl Harbour planted the seeds from which sprang the design concept for the first Australian designed fighter of relatively modern design.

At the time, Mr T W A Air was CAC’s Chief Engineer: “From January 1937 I was Chief Engineer of the Commonwealth Corporation, responsible directly to the manager, L J Wackett for all technical aspects of our aircraft programmes throughout the war years and on to 1952. This included the Boomerang fighter projects CA12 and CA14. . .
