Qantas Takes Delivery of Its First Boeing 787-338ER
The delivery of a new aircraft type is always an important event for an airline. For Qantas, the arrival of the first of the Boeing 767-338ER fleet heralds the elevation of long-range twin engine jet airliners to levels of efficiency and comfort unimaginable even ten years ago.
This extremely fuel efficient aircraft has been acquired to cater for certain segments of Qantas’ route structure and, in conjunction with the rest of the fleet, will enable the airline to be in a superb position to cope with the expected market growth in the years ahead.
The new Qantas Boeing 767-338ERs are landmark aircraft for various reasons. For Qantas it marks a change in direction in being their first purchase of an aircraft with General Electric powerplants. Twenty years ago, all Qantas’ passenger jets were Pr_att & Whitney powered. Nine years ago Qantas took delivery of their first Rolls-Royce RB211 engined aircraft. And today all Qantas aircraft on order are either General Electric or RollsRoyce powered. The significance of this will certainly not be lost on General Electric.
