The NSW government has unveiled a prototype mock-up of a carriage from the new Western Sydney Airport metro line.

Slated to open alongside the airport itself in 2026, the metro line will connect the airport and Bradfield city centre to the Sydney train network at St Marys. Its 12 trains will feature wider aisles to accommodate luggage, as well as other features like digital displays of flight information.

The prototype carriage will allow the metro’s future passengers to evaluate the experience, as well as enable manufacturers, engineers and designers to validate and fine-tune the final trains, which are slated to go into production this month.

“Being able to look, feel, touch and experience the new Metros is helping our teams put the finishing touches on these trains before they go into production,” NSW Transport Minister Jo Haylen said.

“Every train will be fully accessible, beautifully air-conditioned, and a really comfortable way to travel to Sydney’s new airport.

“Once the new Airport metro line opens, each of the 12 new metro trains will have capacity to comfortably move 645 people between Bradfield, St Marys and the new International Airport.”

When it opens, the metro will become a vital transport link for the region, with capacity for 7,740 passengers in each direction per hour, according to Deputy Premier and Minister for Western Sydney Prue Car.

“Testing of this mock-up carriage has been underway for many months and no stone has been left unturned to ensure passengers enjoy a world-class experience when they step off a plane in Western Sydney and onto a fast and reliable metro.

“Western Sydney artists at BBR have delivered a fantastic upholstery design for the seats that will create a unique identity for this line, and welcome international visitors with incredible Aboriginal cultural heritage and contemporary art.”

The news comes as state and federal governments pledge $1 billion to upgrade a two-lane road from Liverpool to Western Sydney Airport.

The refreshed Fifteenth Avenue will connect the new Bradfield city centre, Metro and the airport and allow public transport to operate along the route.

While few specifics have been revealed, Liverpool Council previously urged for the road to become a “visionary city-shaping project” that would include next-generation buses that resemble light rail, as well as cycle lanes.

The state government has also committed to creating two “business cases” that will look at the feasibility of extending the Metro link to the city and removing the need to use traditional trains.
