Will Qantas Get Air New Zealand?
The proposed sale of a 25% share in Air New Zealand to Qantas ends a hotly debated topic. The sale, believed to have cost Qantas $NZ180m is still subject to final agreement. (See also separate story elsewhere this issue. )
From the early days the leading contenders were Qantas and British Airways, with Brierley Investments, Singapore Airlines, EIE Development Co of Japan and Freightways in the bidding. Air New Zealand made little secret of its preference for British Airways because route patterns complemented each other and it could switch into BA’s worldwide Galileo computerised reserv_ations system. The BA linkage was also preferred by State Owned Enterprises Minister Richard Prebble and (it is understood) the Minister of Finance, Roger Douglas.
