Hdh Joins the Training Arena:

Hawker de Havilland has entered the booming business of training pilots for airline needs by purchasing the Australian Aviation College at Parafield, South Australia According to Managing Director, Mr Bruce Hattersley. “It is HdH’s intention to become a major force in the training of international airline pilots. The college will be upgraded to international standards to make it one of the best in the world. It will train pilots to meet the high standards of both national and international airlines with a possible extension to training pilots for approved military customers”.

Initially, trainee pilots will follow a defined syllabus to the gaining of their Commercial Pilots Licence and Command Instrument Rating. Further training will then be tailored to meet the needs of the particular airline for which they will be flying. Two important Malaysian Airlines contracts are already underway. The siting of the college at the relatively uncongested Parafield Airport near Adelaide is a plus. according to HdH, while AAC’s existing residential facilities will be expanded to cater for up to 200 students. AAC founder, Mr Bamey Fernandes, will remain as a consultant while the HdH owned facility will be under the management of Murray Tumbull. Meanwhile at Bankstown, Capt Geoff Westwood will focus on the further development of the long established Australian Flying Training School. AFTS is still the only flying school in Sydney that meets the requirements of the Integrated Commercial School Rating and the only school, therefore, able to offer full-time CPL training covering all theory and flying training to a self-contained syllabus.
