Aircrew Team Management Targeted at Saving Lives

Welcome to our revised Air Safety column as we continue to run items of interest from the RAAF’s excellent Spotlight journal. Spotlight is produced by the RAAF’s highly respected Directorate of Air Force Safety and though relating primarily to military aviation, contains much of direct relevance and interest to airline and private pilot alike. The point is that if you get it wrong, it doesn’t really matter whether your steed is a Hornet, Boeing, a homebuilt or Piper Cherokee. We hope that via our Air Safety column the incidents and accident investigations from Spotlight will enable all pilots to better appreciate that airmanship begins with your own personal attitudes.

One of the significant flight safety problems that the world’s airlines and some military forces have acknowledged in recent years, is that of effective Aircrew Team Management (ATM). It is variously called cockpit resource management, cockpit crew management and others. It has been recognised that on occasions cockpit co-ordination or management has broken down which has contributed to an accident. Airlines and military forces are spending significant sums of money on training aimed at improving ATM. Presumably such improvement is seen as being cost effective.
