This AST 300 flight simulator of Budget Air Services is indicative of where much procedural and instrument flying training is headed. Increasing use of simulators of all types will help reduce training and conversion course costs which in turn will allow more people to not only keep their instrument ratings current but to also obtain them in the first place

Pilot Training: The Boom Continues, but Is Change Necessary?
If you’re a young person whose mind is set on a career as a professional pilot, the next few years will provide the greatest opportunity for some time for you to make that career a real possibility. Flying training is now in a period of boom as a result of a worldwide shortage of pilots, particularly for the airlines and the need for more will continue into the foreseeable future.
The need for more pilots comes as a result of monumental growth in the number of air travellers worldwide over the past half decade. A quick look at the number of new aircraft ordered by the world’s airlines in recent times confirms that growth, as does the increasing amount of air traffic operating into and out of major airports. As has been well reported lately, some airports and air traffic control areas are close to saturation point, not just overseas but also here in Australia.
Sydney airport is a prime local example with lengthy delays both on the ground and in the air becoming standard practice, although these cannot be solely attributed to rapid growth. Sydney’s inadequate facilities, available runways and immigration/baggage facilities must also take a healthy share of the blame – or at least the politicians who decide its destiny should.
