• The Japanese Maritime Self Defence Force is to re-activate its six remaining Grumman S-2A Trackers as a replacement for other S- 2As which have reached their maximum permissible hours. The MSDF is retiring an average of five S-2As annually and the type will have been withdrawn from their service by 1983.
• It has been reported that the Pentagon is seriously considering the Panavia Tornado amongst the aircraft to complement the General Dynamics F-111 on the NATO Central Front by the mid 1980s. However it is believed that a modified version of the McDonnell Douglas F-15 Eagle is a front contender. • Continental Airlines will become the newest international airline to operate services into Australia when it commences flights between Australia and the US on 1 May with McDonnell Douglas DC-10-10s.
