Ansett Steals a March

Competition is hotting up on the tourist circuit between rivals Ansett New Zealand and Mount Cook Airlines (majority shareholder Air New Zealand). For some time Mount Cook has been backing local plans to build an international airport at the South Island tourist hub of Queenstown to allow jets to fly in. Operational constraints and noise problems at the existing mountain hemmed airport largely restrict flying to HS 748s and DHC-8s.

In October, Ansett New Zealand announced that it had ordered two British Aerospace 146-200s. The aircraft will fly Auckland/ Wellington and to the tourist ports of Rotorua and Queenstown. The airline expects to have the aircraft flying by next March.
