East-West acquired two rare F.28-3000s specially for their Yulara short field operations in 1987. The 3000 series essentially combines the more powerful engines and larger wing of the 4000 with the shortened fuselage of the 1000.
The F.28 In Australian Service
Fokker F-28 Fellowship
Part Twenty-Nine in a Series Examining the Airliners That Established Civil Aviation in Australia
Following the enormous success of the Fokker F. 27 Friendship, the Fokker F. 28 Fellowship has proven to be a worthy replacement for the earlier turboprop airliner.
It was perhaps a natural evolutionary process for Fokker to develop a pure jet airliner to capitalise on the large base of Friendship operators. The transition from piston engined airliners such as the Douglas DC-3, which the Friendship replaced in many areas, was occurring worldwide. Fokker foresaw the step to jet airliner operation as the next logical step for many Friendship users. However the substantial success of the Friendship was not to be echoed to the same degree by the Fellowship.
