Defence Exports

There is strong pressure on Australian companies to improve their export performance and the Commonwealth Government is doing much to assist in achieving this but, in relation to the export of Defence Equipment, there seems to be a problem of inconsistency between Government programmes.

Recently Austrade and the Defence Department co-operated extremely well, with one another and with Australian industry, to conduct the highly successful SEAIM ’88 mission to South East Asia. This mission had, amongst other aims, the objective of providing Australian based Defence industry companies with greater market opportunities. The mission members soon realised, if indeed they were not already aware, that our exporters must be able to offer soft finance deals – probably in the form of low interest loans, with holidays from repayments, if they are to be in a position to compete with what their international competitors are offering.
