Cockpit crew are often perceived by the general public as godlike figures, when in fact they are normal people saddled with the day to day burdens, problems and often personal failures of all of us. Their ability to make an incorrect decision in a sudden emergency is to a large extent influenced by the degree of training they receive. Their personal in cockpit management systems and the frequency with which they perform the maneuver in question. A failure of any of the above is the principal reason that over three quarters of all accidents are caused by human error and 80% of all accidents occur in barely 12% of the average flight envelope - while in the takeoff or landing modes.

The foundation, an independent non-profit body with 478 airline and other organisation members in 64 countries, claims to bring independent, neutral objectivity to the study of international aviation safety concerns. Speaker after speaker returned to the theme that pilot training tends to be technically overloaded and psychologically inadequate.
