Opinion: US Air Force chief warns it’s time to rebuild
Shortly before his inauguration, US Air Force Chief of Staff General David Allvin challenged Donald Trump to rebuild the US Air Force as the world’s premier air combat force, responding to China’s rapid modernisation and growing capabilities in an era of great power competition.
Airpower has been a defining element of modern warfare since the Wright brothers’ first flight in 1903. By World War I, aircraft evolved from reconnaissance tools to offensive weapons. The interwar years saw rapid advancements in aerodynamics and weaponry, leading to the strategic bombing campaigns of World War II. The Cold War further transformed airpower with supersonic jets, intercontinental ballistic missiles, and stealth technology, positioning the US Air Force (USAF) as a global leader.
