Aviation Activity Declining as Year Progresses:
Activity levels in the domestic aviation industry continued to decline in June quarter 1989, with negative growth of 3. 9% compared to June quarter 1988 in total tonne kilometers performed (which measures both cargo and passenger traffic levels).
Overall, results for 1988/89 showed moderate growth in the industry, with a 3. 8% increase in total tonne kilometers performed. Passenger kilometers increased by 3. 7%, buoyed by the record traffic levels experienced in September quarter 1988. The RPKs flown however for the June 1989 quarter are just over 20% lower than that of the previously highest quarter ever, that of September last year. This quarter reflected traffic at the height of both Expo and the Bicentennial, it was prior to the ongoing industrial disruption suffered by Ansett and also before ATC problems at KSA and Tullamarine emerged as a nightmare for schedulers and passengers alike.
