Goodbye Sunshine

With a sense of deja vu may I recall to you the final lines of last issue’s Reece. “Any strike action by flight crews in the year ahead will do us all much damage. I sincerely hope those concerned weigh their options carefully and consider the true long-term consequences of what a strike would mean to the entire industry at a time of negative growth. ”

Those obviously pointless words were written just a fortnight before the lunacy that is the pilots’ dispute became fact with the first of a series of crucial stop work meetings around Australia. We had word that a major battle was brewing between the Australian Federation of Air Pilots and their employers way back in March though did not wish to prematurely publicise it owing to the sensitivity of negotiations between the parties concerned. It also appeared that common sense might just prevail and the need to actually resort to a withdrawal of labour would be unnecessary. So much for positive thinking!
