1989 Oshkosh Celebrates Tour Report
Oshkosh 89 With Australian Aviation
The 1989 Australian Aviation magazine/Torii Tours Oshkosh tour was once again an overwhelming success. This year the tour made visits to ten major aviation events and facilities thus allowing members to see, hear and photograph many rare and historical aircraft.
The group assembled in Sydney on July 22nd and flew out on board a United Airlines Boeing 747-100 bound for Auckland and Honolulu. After spending most of our first day at rest due to the early morning arrival, the group got together that evening for a dinner cruise off Diamond Head. Our hotel in Honolulu was the Waikiki Towers, which was centrally situated only a block from the beach. The following morning we visited Pearl Harbour, where we went on board the USS Arizona memorial. A day at leisure followed, which allowed the group to split up on various activities. These included riding round the Hawaiian Islands in a Beech 18, taking a coach tour of the Island of Oahu, visiting the magnificent Ala Moana shopping centre or just enjoying the leisurely beach life at Waikiki.
