New Rules for Ultralights To Come Into Effect by Christmas
A radical overhaul of the Civil Aviation Orders governing ultralight aeroplanes has the potential to place Australia in the forefront of light aviation design and development.
After seeking the views of the aviation industry earlier this year the Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) is planning to introduce new CAOs which will give both the ultralight and general aviation communities access to a new breed of lightweight aeroplanes. The success or otherwise of this new category of aircraft now rests with the Australian aircraft manufacturing industry and will depend on the industry’s ability to produce quality aeroplanes with the characteristics and performance sought by ultralight and general aviation pilots.
In preparing the new CAOs the CAA sought to achieve a number of goals. These were to make aeroplanes certificated to CAO 101. 55 available to both the ultralight and general aviation flying training industries; to ensure that ultralight pilots had access to aeroplanes of proven airworthiness whilst still allowing those individuals who wished to design and build their own ultralight to do so; to give ultralight pilots greater operational freedom and finally to provide a regulatory framework which would lead to the establishment of a viable Australian light aircraft industry.
