The pilots’ dispute has meant big business for charter companies. Andrew Hipwell joined one charter group for a busy day’s flying. This is what he found.
The 5am alarm signals the start of what promises to be a long day’s flying. The charter bookings are full today and the office spent hours yesterday coordinating planes and pilots to reach the most efficient utilisation of men and machines.
We are up at dawn because today’s first task is to ferry eight passengers from Albury to Bathurst; this requires two Navajos, one later to go on to Cessnock for a separate pick-up. It is a clear dawn, chilly in the slight breeze but promising fair weather – at least for the first half of the day. The planes are checked, the flight plans submitted, time for a cup of coffee as we await the passengers.
