With some 335 commitments, the first McDonnell Douglas MD-11 rotates on its maiden flight on January 10 from Long Beach Airport. With 323 passengers, the MD-11 has a range of 6,977nm, while the new trijet's underfloor freight capacity exceeds even that of the 747. The MD-11 will enter service late this yearand will begin operations to Australia in 1991 with American Airlines. A full colour Update will appear in our June edition.

Airbus Ends Decade on High:
Airbus Industrie has ended the 1980s with a flourish, with 1989 its best ever year.
During last year the company recorded 421 sales and 105 deliveries, the latter comprising 24 A300s, 23 A310s and 58 A320s with production of the A320 due to increase to 120 per annum within five years. Airbus ended the decade with the launch of its stretched A320 development, the A321, and heads towards the 21st century with six basic models in its product line from the 150 passenger A320 through the A321, the 218 passenger wide body A310 and 267 passenger A300, the 335 passenger A330 twin- jet and very long range four engined A340.
