Subtle exterior design changes actually make the latest Mooney a far more aesthetically pleasing aircraft than its forebears. Around 165kts TAS on a fuel miserly 65% power is impressive in anyone's language - performance that has always been a Mooney hallmark. (Dave Prossor)

Designed before its time, the Mooney now comes of age
When Al Mooney designed the single seat Mite back in the 1940s, he created an aircraft that had two distinctive features. One was the unique tail with no sweepback on the leading edge of the fin or stabiliser. The second was the concept of getting the most knots for the least horsepower.
So it was that when the Mooney Aircraft Corporation moved into the production of a four seat machine in 1 95 4 those two design features remained with the new design and today are great assets in the sale of Mooney aircraft – distinctive appearance and a legendary high-performance capability for less dollars invested, in an increasingly cost-conscious world.
Over the years Mooney have stuck with the basic design of the aircraft and, while there have been minor diversions, the mainline machine has been progressively fine tuned to produce a better product and the result shows.
