Cathay Pacific Concerned by Erosion of Confidence as 1997 Nears:
Mr Peter Sutch, Deputy Chairman and Managing Director of Cathay Pacific revealed at the Financial Times conference just prior to Asian Aerospace that the airline was concerned by ongoing press reports that Hong Kong was suffering a crisis of confidence as 1997 neared.
He suggested that constant press reports of Hong Kong residents fleeing the colony were only serving to fuel the flames of fear and create a crisis of confidence that would be difficult to counter. Already, HAECO, the maintenance arm of Cathay Pacific, has lost a reported 170 maintenance personnel, including around 100 to Qantas, despite things having settled down following a cessation of dissension from the mainland since last June’s Beijing massacre. Many observers in HK feel that the situation can’t politically get any worse in the PRC and that following the momentous events of recent months in Eastern Europe and Russia that the PRC will eventually have to mellow to the demands of its people at some time in the future.
