The SR-71 Blackbird was officially retired from USAF service in March. Already the holder of several records -including fastest time over a straight course (3,509kmlh)- the aircraft's finale was marked by a record breaking flight from Los Angeles to Washington of just one hour and four minutes (less than a third of the previous best time set in 1963.) So ended the career of this important US spyplane, a victim of improving satellite technology and defence budget cuts.

Rsaf to Upgrade F-5ES:
Singapore is to spend an estimated $100m in upgrading its 45 strong Northrop F-5E Tiger II force.
The proposal comes after the completion of the successful upgrading of the RSAF’s A-4 Skyhawks and would see the F-5Es getting a new radar, new avionics, HUD, additional pylons and a slightly modified wing to enhance agility. Radarchoiceis between the GE APG-67F, Westinghouse’s APG-66T and the Israeli Elta EUM-2032. Israel is also highly placed to supply the cockpit display systems and a special helmet mounted sight which allows the pilot to observe his missile’s trajectory whilst still being able to see the relevant performance data that would normally be displayed on the HUD.
