UK To Australia Rally

The Rally was for aircraft built before 1950 and of the 25 aircraft that started at White Waltham airfield in England on March 25th, 14 arrived at Caboolture, Old on the weekend of May 5th and 6th. Needless to say, the Rally was not without its moments as four aircraft crashed en route and others pulled out for a variety of mechanical reasons. Some will eventually complete the trip by sea. The aircraft that arrived in Australia by air comprise a Howard DGA, AT-6 Harvard, Bellanca 14-13, Stinson 108, Cessna 140, four Cessna 170 aircraft and five Beech Bonanzas. Most of the arrivals are up for sale and one Bonanza has been sold to John Buckley of Violet Town, Vic while the Howard DGA-15P, N66546, has been bought by two Melbourne enthusiasts. The Harvard, ‘Spirit of San Francisco’, was last heard of at Maitland, NSW. It is up for sale and will no doubt swell local warbird ranks. No doubt the rally pilots will have memories to last a lifetime and, we trust, enough to share with others. We look forward to hearing from them.

Kyabram Antique Fly-in

The Easter break saw Kyabram, Vic alive with the sights and sounds of Antique and Classic aircraft at the Annual Fly-in of the Antique Aeroplane Association of Australia. Of the 100 aircraft that attended, some 70 were antique or classic types. The visitors included Cessna C37 VH-UZU, four Winjeels, Harvard VH-OVO, a pair of Stearmans, DH84 Dragon VH-AML, 18 Austers and eight Tiger Moths, including several recently restored machines. Also noted were seven DHC-1 Chipmunks, two DH Doves, a Ryan PT-22, Taylor J-2, Stinson 108 VH-JKD and recently imported Stinson Reliant VH-ISR. A DH Vampire jet and a DC-3 VH-ABR, unable to land, made low passes over the grass strip. DH87B Hornet Moth VH-UXY and three Luscombes were other types that attended the event and enjoyed the good weather and convivial flying atmosphere.
