The prototype McDonnell Douglas C-17 airlifter is nearing completion and is now standing on its own landing gear, though the program remains behind schedule so that first flight will not take place until June 1991. The C-17 is designed to carry a 75,800kg payload of troops, combat equipment and cargo 2,400nm (4,450km) unrefueled/ed, though the USAF envisages the heaviest payload being only 72,650kg while 2,234nm (4,140km)- the distance between Dover AFB, Delaware, and the Azores - should be the maximum operational mission range

Mig-29 Executes Cobra Manoeuvre:
Following on from the stunning cobra manoeuvre first revealed last year by the Sukhoi Su-27 at the Paris Air Show, a MiG-29 Fulcrum has now displayed the same capability. The Soviet MiG-29 was performing at the Canadian Capital Air Show in Ottawa when it performed the manoeuvre, not previously confirmed as a capability of the type. The manoeuvre begins from a near level pass from where the nose is rotated rapidly to 90 degrees and beyond, with a little gain in altitude. This is followed by a rapid return to a
level attitude (while on the ground all jaws hang open!)
