September 1 – The Battle of Britain continues . . . The Luftwaffe attacks London docks and airfields at Biggin Hill, Detling and Eastchurch. Biggin is so badly damaged that an emergency makeshift operations room is made in a local village shop. Controllers and plotters have to work using a school chalkboard!

72 Squadron’s F/Lt Desmond Sheen from Canberra has his Spitfire (X4109) shot up and bails out.
