Caa Introduces Pilot Initiated Waivers:

The Civil Aviation Authority has published a NOTAM (H7/1990, effective 20 September 1990) to introduce pilot initiated waivers against the application of revised wake turbulence separation standards.

Introduction of the pilot initiated waivers follows the Air Safety Regulation Review Task Force’s findings in favour of the US and Canadianrunway separation standards (refer p. 87 August 90 ÁA). NOTAM H7/1990, which introduces the new system, contains guidance material, information on wake turbulence and ways of visualising its location. The material will also appear in the December amendments to the AIP Meanwhile, CAA General Manager Standards Development Division, Mr Peter Rob- bins, has offered the following postscript to AA’s August discussion of runway separation standards: “It is vitally important for pilots of light aircraft to bear in mind, when deciding whether to ask for a waiver, that although the ground roll of their aircraft may be substantially less than that of a leading large aircraft, the large aircraft may well have a substantially higher rate of climb; unless the pilot of the light aircraft can be certain that his flight path will not pass through the leading air- craft’s vortices, a waiver should not be contemplated. If atmospheric conditions are such as to promote the rapid break-up of wake vortices, it may be acceptable to reduce the separation standard, but pilots of small aircraft should exercise great caution in doing even this in the takeoff case unplanned inverted flight close to the ground can rapidly and seriously damage the health of all on board shortly afterwards!”
