Caa Announces Radical Atc Plan:
The Civil Aviation Authority has announced plans for a radical new air traffic control system designed to reduce Australia’s present six ATC control regions to just two.
Under the new plan, there would be just two regional air traffic control centres, one in Brisbane and one in Melbourne. These two centres would handle all approach, departure and en route traffic for Australia, including Sydney and even Perth. Control towers at individual airports currently with ATC services (such as Sydney. Perth and Adelaide) would remain to control landings and take-offs and movements within a 60km radius of the individual airports. Technology being at the stage that it is, air traffic services staff at the Brisbane and Melbourne centres could communicate and track all movements using mainly satellite technology and computer imagery, before passing aircraft over to individual airport control facilities (or in reverse accepting aircraft from airport control) once the 60km radius has been reached. Control towers at individual airports will naturally also direct runway and taxiway traffic, which can only be done visually.
