Considerable Markets Exists in Hub Bypass Routes:
As a follow on to our article in March AA on Ansett Express and its hub bypass philosophy it is interesting to analyse further the potential market that exists to any operator that wishes to establish such operations.
The 1987 May Report identified more than 100 point to point routes that were either not being serviced at all or only lightly and that were considered viable with the correct type of equipment. Our analysis (see table) lists 10 routes for the month of December 1990 and indicates that more than a quarter of the 793,200 pax on these sectors that month were forced to fly into a port which they did not wish to visit. Whilst naturally there will always be a requirement to hub to some extent it does seem that an unnecessarily large number of people (216,851 in this case) are being funnelled primarily through the congested hubs of Sydney and Melbourne for little reason.
