Helicopter Carrier Speculation Re-Emerges
The prospect of the Royal Australian Navy acquiring a second hand container ship and having it converted to a helicopter carnier has resurfaced as the countdown towards release of variations in the Australian Defence Force Structure continues.
According to some sources, the Australian National Line container ship, Australian Venture, of 39,400 deadweight tonnes, is seen as a likely acquisition. Launched in the late 1970s, it apparently is considered ideal for the task of carrying helicopters and troops to cope with emergency tasks in remote parts of Australia, or in trouble spots in the south-west Pacific should an island nation there seek assistance, or Australian nationals sud-denly have to be evacuated. Such a vessel would have to be converted to meet various military standards, including the addition of communications equipment so that it could operate in a command and control role.
