Jal Expected as Most Likely Foreign Qantas Shareholder:
Japan Air Lines is slowly shaping up as the most likely major international shareholder in Qantas.
Links between the two carriers are increasing as the strength of the Japan/Australia market increases. JAL and Qantas are also discussing the possibility of seconding a number of surplus QF aircrew to operate JAL aircraft. With the final recommendations of the Coopers & Lybrand report due to go to Qantas management next month it is expected that due to the fleet rationalisation programme and the reduction in flying hours for 1991/92 that in order to avoid tech crew retrenchments that a number of QF crew will fly with JAL. JAL has a large 747/767 fleet and is presently looking for highly qualified pilots.
