“The thing that really sets this series apart is that we have genuine access to all areas, from the air traffic control tower to the baggage handlers, the Integrated Operations Centre to the teams that turn the aircraft around for the next flight,” Network 10 executive producer Ciaran Flannery said.
“There is huge complexity and intense pressure at every part of the process – and it’s the team of dedicated staff who keep everything moving so smoothly. They are the stars of our show and quite often, heroes, given the severity of some of the emergencies and threats they deal with.
“Melbourne Airport threw open their doors and welcomed in the production team and we’re incredibly grateful for their support and willingness to take us behind the scenes of their busy airport.”
Besides Melbourne Airport, the series saw collaboration with Jetstar, Airservices Australia, and the Australian Border Force. Melbourne Airport CEO Lorie Argus said it will show viewers the work done by staff to keep Australia’s largest 24/7 airport operating.
“The backbone of Melbourne Airport is our team, and I’m thrilled that the show will highlight the incredible work our operational teams do every day,” she said.
“It takes thousands of amazing people working around the clock, 365 days a year to keep Melbourne Airport running smoothly.
“It’s a privilege to get to lead this team, one that I am grateful for every single day.”
Airservices is encouraging viewers to apply for open roles, saying it is “continuing to invest in its workforce across Australia”.
“Airservices Australia – the nation’s air navigation service provider – is thankful to have participated in Airport 24/7 doco series filming alongside our key stakeholder, Australia’s busiest aerodrome, Melbourne Airport,” a spokesperson said.
“For the first time, TV viewers can go behind the scenes with our guardians of the Australian sky at our Melbourne Air Traffic Control Tower and our front-line emergency responders, the Aviation Rescue Fire Fighting service.
“The unique and exciting 10-part doco proudly showcases the hard work of our teams who help safeguard 11 per cent of the world’s airspace in the air and who provide a vital layer of safety to the travelling public on the ground. Airport 24/7 showcases our people’s passion, pride and teamwork.”
