Airbus Predicts Plummeting Orders:

Airbus analysts have forecasted that orders taken by Airbus, Boeing and McDonnell Douglas could plummet from a high of 1,800 in 1989 to a dramatic low of between 300 and 500 during 1993-95.

According to Airbus Industrie Vice-Presi- dent Commercial, Stuart Iddles, the forecast is based on the massive current industry order backlog of 3,600, which is equivalent to almost five years production at the 1991 rate; airlines are expected to react to this backlog by reducing orders. The situation is not, however, all doom and gloom for the manufacturers. Such a drop in orders would enable the airframe producers to maintain strong production to cut down the current order backlog, so that by 1995 customers could be offered just a two year wait for delivery so orders would again pick up.
