Soviets Sign New Western Engine Deals:
Rolls-Royce and Pratt & Whitney have signed deals to supply engines to power the Tupolev Tu-204 and Byushin Il-96 airliners, respectively.
Rolls-Royce has concluded an agreement to supply RB. 211-535F engines for the Tupolev Tu-204 medium range twinjet. The RB. 211 will therefore be the first Wester engine to power a Soviet airliner, with the first engines to be supplied in March 1992 and the RB. 211 powered Tu-204 to make its debut at next year’s Famborough. An engine mock-up was delivered to Tupolev in December last year, and it has been determined that the only major alteration required is to adapt the RB. 211’s accessory system to drive two hydraulic pumps instead of one pump as in the externally similar Boeing 757.
