Boeing now employs two female production test pilots to test fly big jets prior to delivery to customers. The two pilots, Rose Loper (left) and Susan Darcy, are both high hour fliers and amongst only a relatively small number of female test pilots worldwide. Susan Darcy learnt to fly as a civilian pilot and worked up to instructing 757 and 767 aircrews. Rose Loper is a former US Army helicopter pilot, and continues to serve as such in the US Army Reserve organisation.

New V2500-A5 Betters Thrust Target on First Run:
On the first run of its test program, the latest variant of IAE International Aero Engines’ successful V 2500 family has bettered its target of 30,000lb takeoff thrust.
Because of its nature as a test engine, the first -A5 has 1,200 sensors to measure and monitor the performance of the test engine at both sea level and altitude conditions. The two year development program consists of a series of comprehensive tests on a total of nine V 2500 engines, with -A5 certification to be achieved in 1992. It will then be flight tested by Airbus lndustrie and will enter service in 1994 on the A321 with Lufthansa. A derated V 2527-A5 with 26,5001b thrust is also being developed for the A320, so that A320/321 operators will benefit from 100% engine component commonality. The similar -05 variant, which will have identical turbomachinery to the -A5 combined with a new side mounted nacelle, will be available to power the McDonnell Douglas MD-90 with a thrust range of 22-28,000lb. It will enter service with Delta in 1994 onboard an MD-90-30.
