After losing the USAF ATF contest, Northrop has offered both YF-23 prototypes to NASA for flight research. The aircraft would be used for high angle-of-attack tests, as well as high alpha and post stall manoeuvre advanced airborne research. Should NASA reject the offer, the outlook for the aircraft remains bleak, with both likely to be scrapped.

Secret Stealth Recon Aircraft Flying:
The US Air Force is believed to be operating several top secret triangular shaped stealth aircraft in support of its F-117A fleet, according to AWST.
The aircraft, based on the Northrop THAP (Tactical High Altitude Penetrator) development aircraft which first flew in 1981, is designated the TR-3A “Black Manta”. Several are believed to operate alongside the F117As as recon aircraft, providing real time reconnaissance imagery and possibly also augmenting other systems to detect and attack. mobile strategic sites. The first aircraft are said to be housed in hangars near those of the F-117s in Nevada, and several are reported to have been operational in the Gulf War. Others may also have been deployed temporarily to Britain, Alaska, Panama and Okinawa.
