Almost all the General Dynamics F-16 Fighting Falcons flown by the USAF and other nations are facing major structural modifications following the recent discovery of airframe cracks due to metal fatigue. Modification of earlier USAF aircraft have already begun and a worldwide fleet of some 2,900 aircraft is affected. Some F-16s will need new wings.

Decoys Deceived Iraqi Defences:
A large number of the Allied aircraft claimed as destroyed by Iraq were in fact US Navy Tactical Air Launched Decoys (TALDs).
The decoys were used by US Navy A-6, F/A-18, A-7 and S-3 aircraft during strikes against Iraqi targets. The decoys take up the same space as a 500lb (227kg)bomb carried onboard attacking aircraft, and effectively “soak up” enemy surface-to-air missiles, being released by the aircraft prior to being hit. Such were the results of the decoys’ use that over 100 claimed Iraqi kills have been attributed to the use of TALDS, the Iraqis claiming a victory when a TALD was seen to explode.
