Essendon Out, Point Cook In?:

An economic impact study conducted by Essendon City Council has concluded that Melbourne’s Essendon Airport should be shut down and redeveloped for housing, business and industry, and that the flying activity it currently supports should be transferred to what is now the RAAF base at Point Cook. The report claims the Federal Government could gain up to $95m 1f such a move is made. The government recently announced that Point Cook – the RAAF’s founding airfield and ‘sacred’ site – and nearby Laverton would be closed in 1993. Essendon City Council has long campaigned for the closure of its airport, mainly because it can derive substantially more revenue from the 300ha (740 acre) site if it is developed for housing and light industry.
