50 Years Ago . . .

October 1 – North Africa. To facilitate the development of adequate air support for future land operations, No 1 (Australian) Air Support Control under the command of Major AD Malloy AIF will be formed during the month. It will work closely with 451 Squadron RAAF and No 200 Air Intelligence Liaison Section.

Britain. 456 Squadron RAAF is already undergoing a change, converting from its Defiants to Beaufighter ll. The first six had arrived towards the end of September. These machines are equipped with Al Mk IV radar and a training programme to become proficient with the new device will be implemented under F/O G Barker, an expert on attachment to the squadron. Former Defiant gunners will be posted away or will undergo the conversion course.
