Hawker Hunter

Commodore Norman Lee continues his series of articles on aircraft he flew during his service with the Fleet Air Arm.

My introduction to the Hunter was tragically marred by the loss of the commanding officer of the Royal Navy squadron I had just joined on exchange, in a Hunter Trainer.

He had been practising for an air display and had rolled the aircraft inverted at low level over the airfield. Witnesses saw the nose of the aircraft drop and before the pilot could recover, the aircraft had struck the ground.
